natural medicine, healthy winter breakfastI thought I would share my go-to breakfast for a cold winter morning (as a side note, my other secret to staying warm in the winter is sporting some long johns…seriously, try it out and you will never turn back 🙂  This breakfast is warming, nutritious & delicious.  My entire family (including my 2 year-old) loves this breakfast and I feel great about starting our day with it as it’s full of protein, healthy fat, calcium,  fiber and antioxidants. 

Apple Cinnamon Spiced Oatmeal Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole rolled oats (if wheat or gluten-intolerant, look for oats labelled wheat-free).  Note: if using steel cut oats, the ratio of water to oats will be different; a tip to reduce cooking time is to measure and combine the oats & water in a pot, then let soak overnight)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 medium apple, cored, peeled & diced into small pieces
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves (did you know that cloves have been described as “cinnamon on steroids” because like cinnamon they are helpful for muscle aches and arthritis, but cloves are also a top-rated anti-aging herb due to their high antioxidant content, and they can be useful for sore throats, asthma and bronchitis)
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • Toppings: almond milk, ground flax, pure maple syrup

Directions:

Bring water to a boil.  Reduce heat to medium, then add oats, apple, cinnamon, cloves & nutmeg.  Cook uncovered over medium heat for approximately 8-10 minutes (longer for steel cut oats).  Stir occasionally throughout cooking time.  When oats are done to your liking, remove from heat and dish into bowls.  Top each bowl with approximately 1 tbsp ground flax, 1 tsp maple syrup and 2 tbsp almond milk.
