Dairy-free, Soy-free, Sugar-freeAfter a refreshing (and chilly) walk through Hazelwood Trails in Port Carling today with my son, my dog and some great friends, we warmed up with my favourite hot cocoa recipe 🙂  I am a chocolate lover, but also realize the amount of sugar that comes with a chocolate bar (even dark chocolate!) so I’m always looking for ways to have the chocolate without the sugar.  This recipe has that and more, and that’s why it’s called my guilt-free hot cocoa” as it’s free of sugar, dairy, soy and artificial flavours (all of which are generally present in regular store-bought hot chocolate mix).  Not only is it guit-free, it’s actually GOOD FOR YOU!  That’s right, you can have something this delicious that is actually beneficial for your health.  Why you say….read on.

The benefits of RAW (unprocessed) Cocoa:

Raw cocoa powder is known as a Mayan Superfood as it is one of the best natural sources of magnesium (a mineral necessary for many reactions in the body, including relaxation of muscle fibers…that means it’s helpful for tight muscles and menstrual cramping), and a powerful source of disease-fighting antioxidants (one cup of hot cocoa contains as much antioxidant content as a similar-sized cup of green tea or red wine).  Note: cocoa has caffeine content, so try not to indulge too late into the evening and avoid if you are sensitive to caffeine.

Guilt-Free Hot Cocoa Recipe:

  • 1 tbsp RAW, organic cocoa (I find mine at the Bulk Barn, Navitas Naturals)
  • 1/2 cup vanilla rice milk or vanilla almond milk (choose rice milk to keep this recipe nut-free)
  • 1  to 1 1/2 cups boiled water (more water if you need to dull down the chocolate, less if you want the full chocolate experience)
  • 1 tsp honey

Combine 1 tbsp raw cocoa powder with 1/2 cup vanilla rice milk in a medium-sized mug.  Slowly add 1 cup boiled water while stirring to be sure the cocoa powder is fully mixed in.  Now stir in 1 tsp honey.  Taste & add more water if desired.  Enjoy!
